Cop's wife arrested for Rs 3 cr fraud

She duped many women on promise of doubling money

In a high profile case, city police have booked a woman for allegedly duping city’s women investors of more than Rs 3 crore.

Initial investigations have revealed that accused Jyoti Chandani is the wife of sub-inspector posted in state intelligence department. Her husband Prakash Chandani has also been in security of the previous chief minister.

Police officials informed that Jyoti would target high society woman by promising higher interest and also return double the money in a span of six months to one year. Jyoti started kitty parties with some women of her locality and used their connection to befriend rich and affluent ladies known to them.

In a short span, she won the confidence of several high profile women of the city and became the part of their kitty parties.

“After knowing financial status of the lady investors, she would convince them to either purchase property or loan the money on a higher interest rate,” said Girdhari Lal, SHO Adarsh Nagar police station.

In many cases she even ensured the profit to investors so that she can play on higher amount later, he added.

Police informed that in a bid to win the confidence of high society women, she would often show them her pictures with politicians and bureaucrats.

Earlier, victims approached the police to lodge the FIR against Jyoti but each time police refused to do so. Finally, a victim went to court, which directed police to file an FIR.

After the arrest of Jyoti several more FIRs have been reportedly lodged in various police stations of the state. Jyoti was arrested from the residence of her maid’s daughter located in city outskirts.

An FIR for cheating nearly Rs 1.22 crore was lodged at the Adarsh Nagar police station in the city by two investors.
