The women’s wing of Delhi Congress on Thursday staged a protest at the BJP headquarters on Ashoka Road against yoga guru Baba Ramdev’s controversial statements on Rahul Gandhi and Dalits.

Delhi Pradesh Mahila Congress president Onika Mehrotra marched towards 11, Ashoka Road with scores of her supporters. The protesters burnt an effigy of Ramdev.

“The leaders and supporters of BJP are crossing their limits. Ramdev’s anti-Dalit statement was never condemned by the BJP leaders. The party is in fact trying to politicise his statement which is dividing the country,” Mehrotra told Deccan Herald. The protesters also targeted BJP spokesperson and party’s candidate from New Delhi parliamentary constituency Meenakshi Lekhi for allegedly supporting Ramdev’s statement.

“Despite condemning his anti-Dalit statement, the BJP leaders are justifying it. The party should also take strict action against its leader Meenakshi Lekhi for supporting Ramdev’s statement,” she added.

On April 25, Ramdev reportedly said that Rahul Gandhi goes to the houses of Dalits for “honeymoon and picnic”. An FIR under section 171 (g) of IPC was subsequently registered against him in Lucknow. Facing flak from all directions, Ramdev had apologised for his remarks on Gandhi and the Dalits.
