Chain-snatchers have a field day in City

The City witnessed a series of chain-snatching incidents on Friday evening and Saturday morning.

Asha Kumar, 42, a resident of Basaveshwaranagar, was returning home after purchasing vegetables from a nearby supermarket, when a few men in an autorickshaw (KA 05 C 7328) snatched away her chain.

Kumar told the police that she had held on to her gold chain and started screaming, alerting passersby. But the suspects managed to make away with a portion of the chain.

In another incident, Savita Reddy, a resident of Kaggadasapura, was on her way home after shopping, when two unidentified bike-borne men snatched her 60gm gold chain and sped away.

Savitramma, a resident of Kaveri Nagar, was standing in front of her house, when two bike-borne youths, on  the pretext of seeking an address, snatched her 80gm gold chain.

Leelavathi, 45, a vegetable vendor, was selling vegetables on Saturday morning when two unidentified men fled with her gold chain weighing 45 gm. She raised an alarm, but by the time passersby rushed to her rescue, the duo had fled.

In another incident, two men who came on a bike made away with a 50gm gold chain from Padmavatamma, a resident of Dubasipalya, when she was on her way to a nearby shop.
Asked about the chain-snatching spree, a senior police officer said it might be the handiwork of a few local offenders. “We are looking into the matter,” he said.

Clerk commits suicide

K T Ramachandra, 54, a clerk with the Department of Prosecution, hanged himself at his residence in Sampige Layout on Saturday morning.

The incident came to light when Ramachandra’s wife saw him hanging from the window railings of the bathroom. She informed the neighbours who rushed him to a nearby private hospital but was declared brought dead. The suicide note blamed his son-in-law Bhairappa for the extreme step.

The police said Bhairappa was harassing his wife, the daughter of Ramachandra, and recently he had sent her back to her parents’ house. Depressed over this, Ramachandra ended his life, the police said.

The Vijayanagar police have arrested Bhairappa and a case of abetment to suicide has been registered.
