The winning edge

There is no substitute for hard work. And the class XII toppers of the Central Board of Secondary Examination (CBSE) prove just that.

Be it referring to stacks of notes, burning the midnight oil or attending the last bit of extra classes, these students left no stone unturned to ensure that they passed with flying colours in these examinations.

Metrolife spoke to some of the toppers from various streams on the amount of preparation they put in and their plans for the future.

Saurabh Gaggar
98 per cent
National Public School
(Koramangala)

Saurabh is quite excited about the way he has performed. “I studied from the start and read everything that was there in my books.

I want to pursue engineering,” he says. His mother Manju is proud of him and says that he has always been a very determined and industrious child.

“I tried to make sure that we have the right kind of environment at home for him. I tried to be there for him whenever he needed me,” says Manju Gaggar.

Ramesh, Saurabh’s father, says that he has always motivated him to do well.

“He has put in a lot of hard work in the last three months and that did the trick,” adds Ramesh.

Vandana Ramakrishnan
96.6 per cent
National Public School (Koramangala)

Not only is Vandana happy about doing well, she is also thrilled about the fact that her exams are over.

“I had not expected to do so well, I want to take up engineering in the future. I studied throughout the year. I also went for long walks and to the library to unwind,” says Vandana.

Her mother Meera Ramakrishnan, who is a paediatrician, says that she managed to be beside her during the exams though she had a busy schedule.

“This is the result of her hard work and labour that she has put in during the exams. I tried to be with her during the examinations and feeling very proud that she has done so well,” she says.

Rino Abraham Johnson
96.2 per cent
Kensri School

Rino never expected to score so well but is excited that his hardwork paid off. “I didn’t prepare a lot.

In the last few months, I put in a lot of effort and it helped a lot.

I studied about four hours a day. I didn’t fix a schedule as such and just studied whenever I felt like it,” he says.

His favourite subjects are accountancy and economics.

“I stuck to the NCERT books and solved some CBSE sample papers to prepare,” he says. He adds that just like any other student appearing for a public examination, he got stressed at certain points but he de-stressed himself with cricket.

“I played and watched cricket on television too,” he says. His parents Johnson MA and Salamma are proud.

“He has exceeded our expectations and the credit for the results are entirely his,” says Salamma.

Siddharth S Aatreya
96 per cent
Delhi Public School (South)

Siddharth says that he spent enough time with his books and is happy about his grades.

“I had theory and practical-based subjects and thus the time spent on each subject and the preparation process was different,” he details.

“My favourite subject was accountancy and I solved a lot of last year’s question papers. My primary focus was on the NCERT textbook, and I attempted question papers to get an idea and attain the required speed for the exam,” he says.

He says that he used to run an hour everyday to strike a balance. |

His parents Sundar Krishnaswamy and Pushpa are thrilled. “He worked hard and got great results,” says the father. 

Deepshika K
97 per cent
CMR National Public School

Deepshika is happy that her efforts paid off well. She says that she read all her lessons and marked the important points.


“Whenever I was revising, I would just go through the main points and that’s how I remembered the different topics,” says Deepshika. She adds that her teachers guided her well and she also solved sample exam papers.

“I would attempt them just as I was attempting the board exam,” she says. She relaxed by listening to music and playing badminton.

“I also used to go for cycling,” she adds.Her parents, PU Kannan and Deepa, are delighted.

Her mother says that Deepshika was a self-motivated girl and as a parent, they never had to pressurise her.

“We didn’t have to push her at all. She was always organised in everything that she did. As parents all that we did was to support her emotionally,” vouches Deepa.

Athira

Kendriya Vidyalaya
(Hebbal)

Athira has spent many sleepless nights to get where she is now. The youngster doesn’t take being a topper lightly; she has already set her eyes on the Regional Institute of Education in Mysore for a course in Literature.

“I want to be like the teachers I had. That’s why, I opted for literature. Ever since I was a child I wanted to be a teacher.”

Her father, Sasikumar P, one of the people she gives credit to, added, “We have always told her to concentrate. At school, she had teachers who encouraged her. She’s a hard-working student.”
