More women needed in diplomacy: Nirupama Rao

She hoped to inspire some of the students to join the Indian Foreign Services  citing that currently there are about 100 women in the foreign services, 19 of whom are Ambassadors and High Commissioners across the globe.

Diplomats had a good opportunity to showcase one’s social responsibilities as foreign policy usually mirrored the domestic and national priorities of a country.

Rao, an alumnus of MCC herself, had graduated in English (Honors) from the college in 1970. Recalling her years at the college, she attributed her success in the civil services exam to the grounding she received here.

The annual celebration saw some stellar performances by the students. The Indian Musical Association, an MCC club, presented a medley of popular movie songs and western instrumental. The students also staged a theatrical performance titled ‘Woman.’
