Demure Dimple comes to Mulayam's defence

As Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Mulayam Singh Yadav faced the ire of BJP members in the Lok Sabha (LS), his daughter-in-law Dimple Yadav rose to the occasion to defend him.

Dimple, who Mulayam had said was incapable of speaking in the House, rushed to the aid of her father-in-law who was under attack from the BJP members when he questioned Modi on implementation of the poll promises.

A second time MP, Dimple is known to keep to herself in the House and is seen in the company of her brother-in-law Dharmendra Yadav, MP from Budaun.

The wrestler-turned-politician, Mulayam questioned the Modi government on its failure to tackle price rise and giving jobs to the unemployed during the debate on the President’s address.

“The prices of essential commodities have increased since Modi came to power. You made tall promises during the election campaign. Why have you failed in at least reining in price rise? Forget lowering inflation,” Yadav said, prompting BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri to launch a verbal volley at him.

With the SP reduced to four members in the House, Dimple took it upon herself to hit back at the BJP leaders. She was seen countering the BJP members from her seat in one of the rear rows.

The SP was numerically strong in the last Lok Sabha and several of its 21 MPs would have taken on the BJP had a similar incident occurred then.

The four SP members in the LS are Mulayam, Dimple and his nephews’ Dharmendra and Akshay. Interestingly, after the dismal poll performance, Mulayam had wondered who would oppose Modi in Parliament from the party.

“Dimple can’t speak, neither can Ramgopal’s son Akshay Yadav. He is new to Parliament. Only Dharmendra Yadav and I have to take on Modi in Parliament,” Mulayam had said at a meeting of SP legislators on May 23 in Lucknow.
