The Centre on Thursday appointed senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi as the new Attorney General of India. The top-most law officer will have a tenure of three years.

The lawyer, who handled corporate to criminal cases with equal poise, is the 14th Attorney General. He had earlier served as Additional Solicitor General during the previous NDA regime.

Vahanvati, along with other law officers, had already put in their papers after the change of guard at the Centre last month. The government had recently appointed senior advocate Ranjit Kumar as Solicitor General and six others as Additional Solicitor General to represent the Centre in courts.

The term of all the law officers would last till June, 2017.

Earlier, Rohatgi had listed out his priorities by saying that he would try to streamline litigations in the Supreme Court and make all efforts to check that the government was not involved in inter-ministerial litigations.
