A 32-year-old jeweller was shot dead by two persons at his residence in east Delhi’s Shakarpur on Monday morning.

Though police said the suspects are yet to be identified, the victim’s family alleged the involvement of his two younger brothers.

Ekta suspects a property dispute between her husband Rajesh Thakur and her two brothers led to his elimination.

She told police that her brother-in-laws had been involved in scuffles with her husband on several occasions in the past.

Police said they are questioning the suspects after registering a murder case with Shakarpur police station. The suspects were seen in three CCTV cameras installed near the crime spot but they contain footage of the two men with their faces covered by helmets. They had arrived at the house on a motorcycle.

“They knocked on Thakur’s doors at 9 am and told him they were interested in taking the flat on the third floor of his building on rent. As soon as he opened the door, they shot at him and fled,” said a police officer.

Ekta was in the bedroom when the assailants opened fire at Thakur. She rushed out on hearing the sound of the gunshots.

Thakur was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead.

A police team arrived at the hospital while another reached the crime spot. Three empty cartridges were recovered from the spot. Police said he was shot twice in his chest and once in his head.

Police also recovered from the spot a mobile phone, possibly belonging to the assailants.
The phone is expected to provide vital evidence in the case. The recovered items have been sent for forensic examination and the body for post-mortem.

Thakur lived with his wife and two sons, including a toddler, in Shakapur. He owned a jewellery shop in the same area.
