Jilted lover rapes woman

Last Updated 17 November 2014, 03:00 IST

Jealous that she was in a relationship with an “outsider”, a youth allegedly raped a 30-year-old Assamese woman and inserted a stick in her private parts.

His three friends were holding her while he brutalised her in west Delhi’s Mundka area.
The men had barged into her house and thrashed her male companion before assaulting her, police said. Three of the suspects, including the alleged rapist, hail from Assam. They were nabbed by police on November 9, the day the incident took place.

The victim needed hospitalisation and was discharged only on Saturday. She has given her statement in front of a magistrate in which she narrated the sequence of events.

Having separated from her husband four years ago, the woman had come to live in Delhi along with her now eight-year-old son. She lives in a slum in Mundka and worked odd jobs. The suspects were daily wage labourers and they were her neighbours, police said.

“The prime accused Shahjahan, 22, had expressed his desire sometime ago to marry the woman, but she had turned down his offer. Instead she planned to marry another man living in the same locality. Shahjahan was jealous that she had ignored someone belonging to their own state,” said a police officer to Deccan Herald.

Shahjahan and his friends had allegedly warned the woman several times to keep away from her friend, but she did not pay any heed, leaving them miffed.

The victim’s male friend was having dinner with her on the night of November 9 when Shahjahan barged inside with three other friends. They beat up her friend, threw him out of the residence before Shahjahan allegedly raped and inserted a bamboo stick in her private parts while his friends restrained her. When she resisted their assault, they thrashed her.

Neighbours informed police and the woman was admitted to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital with severe injuries. Based on information provided by slum dwellers, the four suspects were arrested and booked for gang-rape.

However, police on Sunday said the victim herself told the magistrate that only Shahjahan had raped her. She is currently in a state of shock and is being counseled by an NGO.
