Last Updated 15 January 2015, 19:42 IST

A police constable who was promoted as head constable didn’t live to celebrate his elevation. He died in a road accident hours after he was informed of his promotion, on Wednesday.

Chandrappa (48) was serving as the driver (in constable cadre) for the police van of City Armed Reserve. On Tuesday, he drove to Udupi along with an undertrial at Central Prisons, Mysuru, who was to be produced at a court there.

According to sources in the police, when Chandrappa was at the court on Wednesday, he was informed over the phone about his promotion.

He had put in 23 years of service. He was asked to collect the copy of his promotion order on his return, on Thursday. But fate had willed otherwise. Chandrappa was driving back to Mysuru when a container truck coming from the opposite direction rammed the police van, killing the driver on the spot.

Police Commissioner M A Saleem visited the house of departed colleague and paid his last respects.
