While some people spend their entire life trying to figure out what they want to do, DJ Rohan Kapoor had it all figured at the tender age of 14. It’s this passion for music that has brought the performer this far.

“When I first heard house music, the feeling I had was like nothing else. After that, there was no looking back.

I don’t remember at which club this was but that beat, the way the people danced to it, the floor…all this stayed with me. Since then, I have had a long journey,” he says.

He says his journey so far hasn’t been an easy one but he has no regrets.

“It has been rough and I’m just starting out from where I want to go. People think being a DJ is very glamourous but it isn’t. It’s hectic because the mood of the whole room rests on your shoulders. There are ups and there are downs; when you are up on stage, having fun, all the ups make for the downs."

Rohan also doubles as a music producer, a skill he is still working on. He recently released his first single called ‘Stay With Me’.

Talking about it, he says, “It’s for all the people who have been or want to be in love, have had their hearts broken...it relates to all kinds of people.”

How difficult is it being a music producer? “It makes me wish I had paid more attention to my physics classes in school! So much effort goes into making just 15 seconds of sound!
I have so much respect for all the music artistes out there because they are making something out of nothing. This is like moving right from the bottom to
the top.”

He adds that he has the best of both worlds because he gets to travel the world as a DJ. “When you are a DJ, it doesn’t matter whether you are performing for a crowd of 100 or 10,000, as long as they are having fun. And it’s a DJ’s dream to travel the world. The only way you can do that is by becoming a music producer.”

According to Rohan, the best moment in a DJ’s career is when, “A club that can hold 10,000 has only a 100 people, and you make those 100 enjoy themselves.” The house artiste, who is known to be versatile when it comes to the kind of music he plays, says he is happy with the booming EDM scene in the country. “Back in the day, a DJ had to be able to play all kinds of music. But now, EDM has become such a trend that when I went to perform in Hubli, Jaipur and Lucknow, they couldn’t get enough of it. This is proof that EDM has spread to all parts of the country, not just the main cities.”

Continuing on EDM, he says, “It is a New Age term. Just like pop was received back in the ‘90s, this is the same. Most people don’t realise that it is a wide category that includes a whole lot of genres, and isn’t a genre in itself.”

He says that although he has played a variety of genres, he has always been enamoured by house music. But he is glad that he is flexible when it comes to performing.

What advice does he have for upcoming DJs? “People have to be driven. They should be willing to work hard. Most times, I see people who want to become DJs but get discouraged after a few years. I’ve struggled for years now and it’s finally paying off,” he
sums up.
