Lok Adalats dispose of over 2 lakh family, labour cases

More than two lakh family and labour disputes were on Saturday settled amicably with a pay out of about Rs 40.17 crore through Lok Adalats held across the country in district courts, High Courts and Supreme Court.

The National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) has been organising national Lok Adalats on every second Saturday for the past few months on specific subjects. This time, the cases related to labour and family matters.

“About 2,35,642 family and labour matters were settled. Of these, about 9,625 were pending matters and 2,26,017 were pre-litigation matters. The total value of settlement reached today was Rs 40,17,02,936,” according to a press note issued by Rajesh Goel, director, NALSA.

He said the aim of Lok Adalats was to reduce pendency as well as prevent additional litigation burdening the courts.

“Through Lok Adalats, the attention of the public has been drawn to the efficacious Alternative Dispute Resolution method. There will be no further appeal in the matters settled today. Thus, it will have a significant impact on the overall judicial system. On the other hand, settlement at pre-litigation stage would mean that many cases will never reach the courts,” he added.
