'Kamal adds a lot of quality to the frame'

Relief, joy and immense satisfaction are palpable in Ramesh Aravind’s voice. His latest directorial venture ‘Uttama Villain’ has been released and the actor-director is now waiting for people’s verdict.

The release of ‘Uttama Villain’ has not only left Ramesh excited but nervous as well. He points out that this particular project with Kamal Haasan has taught him a lot and made him appreciate different people’s points of view. “I now collaborate with a more open mind. I also choose my battles more carefully. I don’t sweat on small stuff but let go of the things that don’t matter much in view of the bigger picture,” he says.

He also feels that after working on ‘Uttama Villain’  his understanding of various aspects of filmmaking has deepened.

Kamal and Ramesh are not only the best of friends but have collaborated on a lot of projects together.

Ramesh says that he has learnt a lot by observing Kamal, including his attention to detail. “Kamal is an enormously talented actor and working with him in the past, and even on this project, has been a rewarding experience. He adds a lot of quality to the frame through his sheer talent. And people will get to see him in avatars that he has never attempted before,” Ramesh says.

For Ramesh, the director’s job goes beyond ‘action’, ‘take’ and ‘cut’. Sharing his experience as a director so far, Ramesh says that from making a comedy film like ‘RamaShamaBhama’ to a thriller like ‘Accident’ was fun. “But ‘Uttama Villain’ is a big tale in every aspect — in terms of proportion, pool of talent, resources and aesthetic possibilities,” he shares.

He goes on to say that for him, direction is very satisfying. “You watch various things like acting, set design, lighting, costumes and writing come alive on the television monitor in front of you. Then you decide if the mixture is in tune with the overall vision of the movie,” he adds.

He also states that the ‘takes’ the director finally okays upon form the movie and is frozen forever.

“So, direction is a huge responsibility. One indeed gets a big high by sitting in the director’s chair,” he adds.

Ramesh had devoted a lot of time to ‘Uttama Villain’ and says that he owes it all to his wife Archana and children —  Niharika and Arjun. “They are a bundle of joy to me. As I was away in Chennai most of the time, it was Archana who managed the homefront entirely, allowing me to focus on work,” he signs off.
