A woman is suspected to have bludgeoned her 45-year-old husband to death and set the body on fire at their residence in Chowdeshwari Nagar in Rajagopala Nagar area in the early hours of Friday.

The police have identified the deceased as Vijay Kumar, a daily wage labourer. The suspect, Maheshwari, and the couple’s two children are absconding. The police said Kumar, a chronic drinker, used to fight with Maheshwari every night. On Thursday night, too, he came home drunk and the couple had a heated argument. Kumar grabbed a knife from the kitchen and attempted to kill his wife, but the neighbours intervened and calmed him down.

Around 12.30 pm, the couple started fighting again and Kumar tried to stab his wife. But Maheshwari took a stone and smashed it on his head. Kumar suffered severe head injuries and died on the spot. Maheshwari then poured kerosene on the body and set it on fire before fleeing with her two children, the police said.

The incident came to light on Friday morning when one of the neighbours saw the door open and  went inside, he found Kumar’s charred body. He informed the other neighbours and the police, who shifted the body for post-mortem. The police are on the lookout for Maheshwari.
