A three-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted in south Delhi’s Sarojini Nagar on Saturday.

A neighbour had spotted the girl bleeding and informed her mother. At present, she is admitted in the ICU of Safdarjung Hospital and battling for her life on ventilator.
The girl lives with family in Philanj village. According to police, she seems to have been lured by someone known to the family while playing outside the house at around 9.30 pm.

A neighbour had seen her crying at a nearby vacant plot.
“She was bleeding and her clothes were tattered. The neighbour immediately took her to her mother,” said a police officer. The girl’s parents rushed her to Safdarjung Hospital, where a medical examination confirmed sexual assault.

The hospital authorities informed police. “The girl underwent a minor operation and was shifted to the ICU. She has been kept on the ventilator and her condition is stated to be critical,” the officer added.

A team from Sarojini Nagar police station has recorded the statement of the girl’s parents. Her father runs a stall of fast food, while her mother is a housewife.

In her statement, the girl’s mother told police that it appears as if she was scared with a knife by the accused as she kept mentioning about a knife on returning home. After initial probe, police also says that she may have been kidnapped by someone known to the family.

A case under Indian Penal Code and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act has been registered with Sarojini Nagar police station.

“A team consisting of 15 policemen has been formed to establish the identity of the accused and trace his whereabouts. Few members of the team have gone to Bihar to conduct a raid,” the officer said.

On Sunday morning, Delhi Commission For Women President Barkha Singh visited Safdarjung Hospital and met the girl’s parents. She said it was extremely shameful that such incidents were taking place in the capital.

“It is a very unfortunate and shameful that this incident has happened in the capital and that they are just not stopping,” Singh added.
