Two cops rescue naked woman from drain

Last Updated 23 June 2015, 03:51 IST

A woman in a naked state, who is understood to be “mentally disturbed”, was rescued from a drain by two policemen on Monday.

They used their uniforms to form a rope to reach the victim. Aged somewhere in her early 40s, she was initially feared to have been sexually assaulted before being pushed into the drain, but her medical examination has ruled out the possibility of rape.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (PCR) R K Singh credited the quick thinking of constables Harinder Singh and Amar Singh for the swift rescue bid.

“The drain was between eight to 10 feet tall. The case would not have turned out the way it did had the two constables not tied articles of clothing from their official uniforms to create a makeshift rope which was extended to her so that she could be pulled out,” Singh said.

Police said the two constables were patrolling near Geeta Colony flyover aboard a PCR van when they heard the frantic cries of a woman emanating from somewhere near a rotary towards the Shanti Van-side around 4.45 am.

The police vehicle was halted and the two constables soon realised that the victim was crying for help from a drain located right below them.

Singh said the constables, on realising that they did not have a rope or anything else to reach the victim, quickly took off their uniforms tying these together to form a makeshift rope which was thrown beyond the edge of the drain.

“She caught hold of this rope and was gradually pulled out of the drain before being rushed to Aruna Asaf Ali Government Hospital for medical aid,” he added.
However, the police team made a quick pit-stop before that.

he constables paid a visit to a slum cluster nearby from where arranged some clothes for her before ferrying her to hospital.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Parmaditya, under whose jurisdiction the drain falls, she was admitted and subjected to a medical examination which ruled out sexual assault.

“She regained consciousness only in the evening and is stable now. Efforts are being made to trace and restore her to her family,” Parmaditya said.

Meanwhile, according to Singh, the two constables have been recommended for a reward.
