Militants vow to disturb I-Day: Assam Rifles

The Assam Rifles, which is entrusted to guard the porous 1624-km long Indo-Myanmar border, has alerted the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) of more attacks by the United National Liberation Front of West South East Asia (UNLFWSEA) ahead of Independence Day.

The outfit was recently formed as a joint platform of North-East militant groups operating out of the their bases in Myanmar’s Sagaing division.

According to Assam Rifles sources, security along the Indo-Myanmar border in Nagaland, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram has been tightened to prevent incursion by the militants ahead of the Independence Day celebrations on August 15. The force said it has inputs of militants trying to launch a major offensive in Assam, Nagaland, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh.

The Assam Rifles sounded an alert after the it foiled a major attack when it recovered explosives and ammunition — two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and two military grade anti-tank mines in the jungles of Polubadze Mountain on July 21, in which one NSCN (K) cadre was killed.

The Centre has shared the information with all N-E states that share borders with Myanmar and Assam.

Meanwhile, MHA sources have added that daily reviews on security scenario in the region is being done at various levels following the June 4 ambush by UNLFWSEA in Manipur where 18 jawans lost their lives.
