Village's new art space is promising

Last Updated 17 August 2015, 18:22 IST
In the popular hangout spot of south Delhi’s Hauz Khas Village is the newly opened branch of Art Konsult, which has been a premier institute for fine art since two decades with its gallery space in Lado Sarai. With the theme, ‘Kinetic Contours’, the ‘exhibition of drawings, paintings and sculptures’ brings different kinds of artists and their work under one roof.

Some well-known names like Gond artist Venkat Shyam, Jayshree Burman, Jamini Roy, Sanjay Bhattacharya, among others, are showcasing different forms of artwork from Gond to abstract to oil on canvas. Curated by art critic Uma Nair, the display shows creations that concentrate on the compelling power of each medium and the artist’s take on the same. With US President Obama’s sketch to the sculpture of a dog, to mixed media presentations, some of the narratives shape the exhibition’s theme.

From Sudip Roy’s delicate Durga in fine thread lines to Gopi Gajwani’s caricature of Abdul Kalam to the graceful contours of Jamini Roy, the colours, the interplay of black and white with the collective ideas of art, ‘a sheet of paper and the act of drawing can present an uncanny alchemy’ believes the curator. Stretching the boundaries of one’s imagination and the various ideas related to seclusion are some of the popular ideas that find space.

The collection is wide, depicts more than 15 artists and has a wide range of interpretations that shape the mind. Also, the choice of the gallery’s location is a point worth mentioning. Just like the text at the exhibition reads, ‘Newton D Souza once told critic and curator Uma Nair, “You have to abandon yourself, loosen your beliefs and swim in the exploration of your own fantasy. No rules---break the rules and create your own”, he would say in autocratic arrogance’, the intent seems to show throughout. The exhibition is open all days including Sundays till August 31 from 11 am to 7 pm.
