Vishwa Konkani Sahitya Samaroh from tomorrow

The World Konkani Centre in association with Department of Kannada and Culture and Department of English of Goa University will organise a two-day literary extravaganza — Vishwa Konkani Sahitya Samaroh 2015, at the World Konkani Centre on November 5 and 6.

Briefing media persons here on Tuesday, Kendra president Basti Vaman Shenoy said that the Vishwa Konkani Sahitya Samaroh aimed at enriching literary experiences in Konkani and would feature talks, panel discussion and research paper presentations.

The Centre for Endangered Languages in Vishwa Bharathi, Santi Niketan, Chair Dr Udaya Narayana Singh will inaugurate the programme. Mangalore University Vice Chancellor Prof K Byrappa will preside over the programme.

A national seminar on contemporary Konkani women writers on the topic ‘Creation and transcreation’ will be part of the Samaroh with a keynote address by Uday L Bhembre, chairman, Poet Bakibab Borkar Chair, Goa University.

A panel discussion will also be held on the theme focussing on the translation aspects and the contributions of the translation studies in Indian literature featuring eminent scholars and translators like Vidya Pai, Dr Geetha Shenoy, Dr Judy Pinto, Sheela Kolambkar, Tara Bhat and others will be held. About 26 research papers will be presented.

He said that a lecture on ‘Translating poetry— challenges of creativity and fidelity,’  in memory of J M Lobo Prabhu and Louella Lobo Prabhu will be presented by eminent poet Jerry Pinto. Another special attraction will be campfire poetry session at the World Konkani Kendra.

The session will be chaired by poet Melwyn Rodrigues. Eminent poets like H M Pernal, Andrew L D’Cunha, Sanjiv Verenkar and Shakunthala Kini will take part. Shenoy said that a talk on ‘Translating the world-strategies and innovation,’ will be delivered by Dr Udaya Narayana Singh on November 6 at 9 am which will be followed by a panel discussion on ‘From creative mind to a translator’s pen: Shifts and adaptations of the craft.’ The panel discussion will be moderated by critic and writer S R Vijay Shankar.

Award distribution

Basti Vaman Shenoy said that the Vishwa Konkani Sahitya Samaroh will conclude with the presenting of Vimala V Pai Vishwa Konkani Sahitya Puraskar 2015 to Meena Kakodkar for her novel Vastu. Eminent poet Andrew D’Cunha will be given Vimala V Pai Vishwa Konkani Kavita Kruti Puraskar for ‘Anjurachem Paan,’ an anthology of Konkani poems.

Doyen of Konkani movement Suresh Gundu Amonkar will be given Vimala V Pai Vishwa Konkani Jeevan Siddi Samman on the occasion. Madam Grace Pinto, founder of Ryan Group of institutions and Shantaram of Bhandarkar’s Institutions in Kundapur have been selected for Basti Vama Shenoy Vishwa Konkani Seva Puraskar considering their exemplary service in the field of education.

The awards will be presented at T V Ramana Pai Convention Centre in Mangaluru on November 6.
