An airport-bound passenger was killed on the spot and four were injured in a serial accident on the elevated expressway, off Allalasandra, on Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) Road on Sunday evening.

The deceased was identified as Lal Bahaddur, 45, a native of Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh. The injured, Hemanth Kumar, Savitha Kumari and two others, were rushed to the Columbia Asia Hospital. They are out of danger. Bahaddur’s driver escaped unhurt and fled the spot after the accident. The police are on the lookout for him.

Bahaddur had come to the City on some work and was heading to the airport to catch a flight. The accident took place at around 5.50 pm. The speed limit on the expressway is 80 km per hour, but the driver was overspeeding, police said.

In order to overtake a vehicle, the driver slightly took a right turn, but failed to control his speeding car. The car crossed the central median and entered the opposite way, where vehicles from the KIA move towards the City. The car hit three other cars, collided with the central median and stopped, police said.

Lal Bahaddur who was sitting next to the driver was killed on the spot due to massive injuries. Hemanth Kumar, Savitha Kumari and two others, who were coming to the city in their cars suffered injuries. A few flower pots placed on the central median broke into pieces as the car hit them. The pieces were tossed up in air and hit a few vehicles damaging the window panes, police said.

Vehicles piled up on the busy express-way creating a traffic jam for close to two hours, causing tense moments for the air passengers. The police cleared the cars involved in the accident and ensured smooth vehicular flow.

Rash and negligent driving is said to have caused the accident. The police have registered a case against the driver whose identity is yet to be established.
