Heart of accident victim now beats in 42-year-old man

Other vital organs of 22-yr-old to help save more lives

The City witnessed another organ donation after the family of a 22-year-old road accident victim consented to donate his vital organs.

The ‘live’ heart, which was kept in the artificial ventilator for almost five days, was transplanted on City-based Venkataram (42), who suffers from heart disorder, at the MS Ramaiah Narayana Heart Centre, a unit of Narayana Health, on Sunday. The recipient was suffering from dilated Cardio Myopathy and was admitted for treatment at MS Ramaiah Narayana Heart Centre.

The surgery took around two hours. While the accident victim’s heart saved the life of Venkataram, other organs (kidneys, eyes and liver) would give a new lease of life to many others. The recipients are identified in coordination with Zonal Coordination Committee in Karnataka for Organ Transplants (ZCCK).

The cadaver was shifted to MS Ramaiah Narayana Heart Centre and the heart was retrieved by Dr Julius Punnen, senior cardiac and transplant surgeon at Narayana Health City. This is the second heart transplant performed at MS Ramaiah Narayana Heart Centre and the 15th heart transplant performed by the Narayana Health group.
