The uproar in Parliament on Tuesday found its match in the House meeting of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) as Congress and Left councillors raised slogans and demanded the resignation of Mayor Sovan Chatterjee on Wednesday.
The Mayor of the Trinamool Congress-led civic body has been embroiled in a controversy over a video, which purportedly shows senior Trinamool leaders accepting bribes.
The Left and Congress, who have struck an alliance for the upcoming state Assembly polls, disrupted the House proceedings and kept demanding the Mayor’s resignation, who is allegedly among the 11 top rung Trinamool leaders shown in the footage.
The video surfaced on a little-known news portal, which the BJP leadership then presented before the media, leading Trinamool leaders to cry “political conspiracy” using what they called “doctored” footage.
While Congress and CPM councillors jointly protested outside the Mayor’s office at KMC headquarters in central Kolkata, some Congress councillors threw fake currency notes in the air, just like Youth Congress activists had done during a protest rally in Kolkata on Tuesday.
