The Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) on Wednesday increased the power tariff by 9 %  for the fiscal 2016-17.

The increase per unit ranges from 15 paise to 50 paise with an average increase of 29 paise per unit for all categories other than irrigation pumpsets (IP sets). The revised tariff will come into effect from April 1.

All Electricity Supply Companies (Escoms) and the Hukkeri Rural Electricity Cooperative Society had sought a revision of Rs 1.02 per unit.

The revised tariff for domestic consumers will, however, be between 30 paise to 50 paise per unit, while it will be 15 to 30 paise for Low Tension (LT) industrial consumers and 35 to 45 paise for High Tension (HT) industries. Similarly, the Commission increased the tariff for LT water supply installations by 50 paise per unit while it is 40 paise per unit for HT water supply installations. For educational institutions and hospitals the hike will be between 20 to 40 paise per unit.

The KERC has also allowed a marginal increase of Rs 5 per KiloVolt (KV) in fixed charge and directed the escoms to clearly inform consumers on increase in fixed charges.
