Kaliyanda wins Shanteyanda hockey cup

Kaliyanda team beat Palangada by 6-5 goals to grab victory in the 20th year’s Shanteyanda cup hockey tournament on Sunday.

During the final match at FMC College ground in Madikeri on Sunday, both Palangada and Kaliyanda secured equal scores which resulted in a tie. During the penalty stroke, again, both the teams got 2-2. However, left with no choice, the referee went for ‘sudden death,’ in which the Kaliyanda team won a goal and became victorious.

The winning team Kaliyanda was awarded with Rs two lakh cash, along with an attractive trophy. Palangada was awarded Rs one lakh cash and an attractive trophy. The Kuppanada and Kootanda teams, which reached till semifinals were presnted with Rs 25,000 each.

Kuppanda Somaiah bagged the best player of the tournament while the best player (female) was bagged by Anjaparavanda Bheeshma Appaiah. Paradanda team won the best team award. The Biddatanda family was handed over the leadership of 2017 Shateyanda cup hockey tournament. Defense Minister Manohar Parikkar inaugurated the final match.
