A man, who was critical after a suicide pact over a domestic issue, died at a hospital on Sunday.

The police identified the deceased as Manichandra, 48, a resident of Shivapura in Peenya.

Manichandra and his wife Sujatha had ingested poison at Gollahalli near Nelamangala on Friday evening after their daughter Rashmi eloped with a neighbour, added the police.

Rashmi was in love with Sridhar, a tenant in a house owned by her parents. Rashmi’s parents were opposed to the affair as Sridhar belonged to a different caste. Rashmi had celebrated her birthday on Friday and had eloped with Sridhar, said the police.

Sridhar called up Manichandra on Friday evening and told him he had married Rashmi. Unable to bear the humiliation, he and his wife decided to commit suicide. They went to Gollahalli near Doddabelavangala and drank poison, added the police.

A few local residents rushed the couple to a nearby hospital, but Sujatha was declared brought dead. Manichandra failed to respond to the treatment and breathed his last on Sunday, added the police.

The victims’ relative Appu Rao lodged a complaint with the Peenya police as his efforts to trace the couple failed. The Peenya police registered a case of abetment to suicide against Sridhar and transferred both the cases to Doddabelavangala police.
