Brother-in-law plots man's kidnap, murder

Property dispute behind crime; police arrest six suspects

The CK Achukattu police have arrested six men who had kidnapped and murdered a businessman at the behest of the victim’s brother-in-law.

The police said the accused had kidnapped Navamani, 55, murdered him and burnt his body near KGF. The police are on the lookout for Navamani’s brother-in-law Chamaraj, a manager in a retail store and his wife Lakshmi.

They had paid the accused Rs 1.65 lakh to kill Navamani following a property dispute.

On June 8, Navamani’s wife Jyothi lodged a complaint with the CK Achukattu police that her husband who went out around 11 am on the previous day to buy CCTV cameras to be installed at their house had gone missing. She suspected that he might have been murdered.

During investigation, the police found that Jyothi’s elder brother Chamaraj had divorced his first wife and subsequently transferred his property into Jyothi’s name through a gift deed. After a few months, Chamaraj married Lakshmi.

After the wedding, he asked Jyothi to return the property or pay him Rs 1 crore. Jyothi and Navamani negotiated a deal and agreed to pay Rs 70 lakh. Initially, they paid Rs 10 lakh but started ignoring Chamaraj thereafter, said the police. 

An upset Chamaraj decided to get Navamani murdered. He entrusted Lakshmi’s brother S Narasimha Murthy, an electrician with  with the task of eliminating Navamani and paid him Rs 1.65 lakh. Murthy and his five friends shared the money and murdered Navamani, the police said.

On June 23, when the police questioned Murthy, he confessed to the murder. He told the police that they kidnapped Navamani in a car, took him to a deserted place near KGF and murdered him. 

After setting the body on fire, they returned to the city and informed Chamaraj about the murder. The police have arrested Murthy, 24, G Girish, 21, G Vishal, 21, Gewar Ram, 29, Abraz Pasha, 20, all residents of K R Puram and Pradeep of Kolar. The police have seized Rs 1.65 lakh cash, a car and weapons from them.
