The High Court on Saturday asked the District Health Officer of Dharwad why no register was maintained while treating villagers who were brutally caned by the police during the Mahadayi agitation.

Justice A N Venugopala Gowda questioned why the health officials showed apathy while treating villagers. While questioning the Karnataka State Human Rights Commission (KSHRC) on their progress in investigating police excesses, the judge asked how the commission is handling cases with a staff crunch.

It was submitted to the court that there are over 12,800 cases pending before the commission. The judge directed the commission and the Karnataka State Legal Services Authority to submit a progress report in the next hearing on August 26.
