Tamil Nadu chief minister and AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa was admitted to a private hospital here on Friday after she complained of fever and dehydration.

Apollo hospital sources here confirmed that Jayalalithaa was suffering from fever and dehydration. “Madam is stable and under observation," the maiden bulletin issued by hospital chief operating officer Subbiah Viswanathan, said.

As news of Jaya’s indisposition spread, AIADMK cadres across Tamil Nadu, including senior ministers and party functionaries, thronged the hospital from early morning. Some cadres occasionally raised slogans for their "Amma" to get well soon.

However, no one was allowed inside and a heavy security blanket was thrown around the hospital complex. Traffic  came to a standstill on Greams Road, where the hospital is located. Police had a tough time easing the traffic snarl  during the morning peak hours.

By noon, tense AIADMK cadres heaved a sigh of relief after hospital authorities announced that their party supremo's health condition was stable. The second bulletin from the hospital authorities said that Jayalalithaa had no fever and was taking a normal diet. "Honourable chief minister is under observation," the communique said.

Hospital sources told Deccan Herald that Jayalalithaa may be discharged soon depending on her health condition. “A group of doctors is constantly monitoring her health parameters,” a senior hospital staff seeking anonymity said.

Die-hard AIADMK cadres, including senior leaders, sought divine intervention by offering special prayers at various temples across the city for their leader's speedy recovery.

Various political leaders across the country, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Opposition DMK president M Karunanidhi, wished Jayalalithaa a speedy recovery.
Modi sent a bouquet of flowers and a letter to the Tamil Nadu chief minister.
