After the completion of the work on pedestrian underpass, the CMC will undertake second phase of concreting works in Madikeri from Private bus stand to Cauvery hall via College road.  The CMC had come forward to construct pedestrian underpass under KMRDP project of World Bank in 2007-08 at an estimated cost of Rs 39 lakh. However, as the merchants opposed the move to construct underpass, the CMC had to postpone it temporarily.

In the meantime, a meeting convened by the MLA M P Appacchuranjan on Saturday decided to carry on the work of underpass. The project will be undertaken under World Bank aide.  The CMC will write a letter to consultants seeking guidelines on the underpass project. “The decision on pedetsrian underpass will be taken after we get reply from the consultant,” said CMC Commissioner K Srikanthrao to Deccan Herald. The CMC is planning to construct pedestrian underpass using latest technology. With this, the work can be completed within few months, said CMC President P D Ponnappa.

In case of neccesity, we will utilise CMC fund after seeking permission for the same in the meeting, he added.

On the whole, the public can expect the realisation of one of the long pending demands of underpass in Madikeri soon. This will help the pedestrian to reach from KSRTC bus stand to the main road. The CMC has already decided to undertake 10 metre wide concrete road from private bus stand to Cauvery hall.

The remaining fund of Rs 30 lakh from KMR project and funds released under Chief Minister’s small, medium town development project will be utilised for the concreting of road. To carry out second phase of concreting work, the CMC will require Rs one crore, it is said.
