For the first time, the Union Budget documents contained a consolidated Outcome Budget detailing the output of the schemes of 68 ministries and departments. This was announced by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in his Budget speech in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

“For the first time, a Consolidated Outcome Budget, covering all ministries and departments, is being laid along with the other Budget documents. This will improve accountability of the government expenditure,” Jaitley said.

In the preface, the Ministry of Finance said that from 2017-18, outputs and outcomes of the schemes of all ministries and departments will be available along with the financial outlays as part of Budget documents, so that clearly defined objectives and goals for each scheme can be seen by all. The present Budget, it said, makes a significant departure from the past.
