A day after a Nigerian national died under mysterious circumstances, the African community members still maintained it was murder and demanded an independent inquiry.

“Embassy officials told us they are moving a petition to the Ministry of External Affairs on the incident. We are waiting for communication from the ambassador,” said Bosco Kaweesi, legal adviser, All African Students Association in Bengaluru.

The members, after learning about the sequence of events from the 24-year-old Nigerian youth who managed to escape, suspect that the victim was killed by plainclothes men who were ‘helping’ the police.

The youths threw a hollow block on them before escaping, told a member.
Between 40 and 50 locals wielding canes chased the duo on their bike and surrounded them when they stopped, said a member. It is a fact that police rope in locals when they conduct raids like these, said Bosco.

“Madu may have been killed by the mob, not necessarily policemen,” said Igwe Elvis Ohachosim, Nigerian Community president in Bengaluru. “We have not met any senior police officers as we have lost confidence in them,” he said, dismissing the police version that Madu was killed in an accident.

Meanwhile, DCP North (Traffic) told DH, “We only have the name and nationality of the victim. We need more details from his passport and visa documents that we have sought from the Foreigner Regional Registration Office (FRRO) which we hope to get on Wednesday. Our men are also on the lookout for the rider who managed to flee,” she added.
