City Market garbage contractors seek more sorting points

Last Updated 15 April 2017, 19:58 IST
Garbage contractors handling waste generated at KR Market have urged Mayor G Padmavathi to provide segregation points at four places around the market.

During the inspection of the market on Saturday, the mayor was upset with the poor handling of waste and the pathetic condition of the parking lot in the basement. She took BBMP officials and garbage contractors to task for the unhygienic condition of the market.

The contractors told the mayor that the situation will not improve unless they are provided with segregation points at four places as waste piles up in the market every 10 minutes and quick removal of waste to these segregation points was necessary. Officials emphasised that new parking lots around the market are required to ease traffic congestion.

The mayor assured the officers and contractors that she would discuss the issue with the BBMP commissioner and BBMP estate division officers to identify places for the parking lot and segregation points.

The mayor oversees the cleanliness drive at the KR Market every Saturday. Many school and college students and NGOs have lent their support to clean up the mess around KR Market.
