PM wants BJP-ruled states to check pilferage

Last Updated 25 April 2017, 20:12 IST

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has directed the 13 chief ministers of the Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled states to plug leakages in government schemes for reducing unwanted burden on public exchequer.

Modi also asked the chief ministers and four deputy chief ministers to hold meetings with insurance companies to ensure that insured people are not fleeced after they have paid all their instalments or in case of an untimely death.

BJP sources present in the Sunday’s meeting said the prime minister intervened when a chief minister was discussing about health schemes. Modi said that for the past two years he has been trying to find out a mechanism that makes companies accountable for time-bound payments of insurance money to their clients. But, Modi acknowledged that he has not been able to find an answer.

The prime minister requested the chief ministers to give up the tendency of announcing ex-gratia to victims of train accidents. Instead, the chief ministers should ensure that victims’ families do not sweat out to get insurance money after the tragedy.
