Australia were bundled out for 231 in their first innings while New Zealand finished their first essay on 264, 33 runs ahead of the visiting side.
Australia, who enjoyed a 300-run lead at the end of day three, declared their second essay at 511 for eight and had New Zealand on the backfoot at 185 for five, 294 runs behind with one day left in the Test. No one in New Zealand’s batting line-up managed to score more than 30 runs in an innings dominated by Mitchell Johnson, who ended up with three wickets.
Martin Guptill (29 batting) and Brendon McCullum (19 batting) remained unbeaten at stumps, but are the last line of defence before New Zealand's bowlers will be forced to take the crease.
Johnson was the pick of the Australian bowlers with figures of three for 39 while Michael Clarke and Nathan Hauritz managed to pick up a wicket each.
