Villagers fine youth for love marriage

The villagers have threatened to ostracise youth’s family if he fails to cough up the fine amounting to Rs 30,000, the sources in the family said.

Prabhu and Gauri, both natives of Mugalabele were in with each other. However, Gauri’s parents where opposed to the marriage and on March 5 forcefully conducted Gauri’s marriage with Venkatesh.

But Gauri eloped with Prabhu just three days after her marriage. Police traced the couple after a complaint was lodged with them. Gauri contended that she was married against her wish and expressed her will to stay with Prabhu.
The matter however didn’t end there. The village leaders after holding a panchayat imposed Rs 30,000 fine on Prabhu. The couple who belong to Schedule Caste have been living under fear and threat.

The Prabhu’s family members have sought help from authorities concerned.
