Trisha rallies to clinch U-19 singles title

 Trisha Hegde made a strong comeback to defeat Drithi Yatheesh and lift the girls’ under-19 singles trophy at the Yonex Sunrise Karnataka State badminton championship here on Saturday.

Number three seed Drithi started well and claimed the first game 21-12 but lost steam thereafter. Trisha, seeded fourth, took the fight to her opponent winning the next two games 21-16, 21-17 to wear the crown.

In the men’s category, top seed Raghu M had to dig deep before booking his passage to final. Playing Nikhil Shyam Sriram in the semifinal, Raghu was down a game (10-21) before staging a comeback to win the next two games 21-5, 21-17.

Raghu will take on Daniel Farid S, who beat Hemanth MG 16-21, 21-10, 21-10 in the other semifinal.  

In the boys’ under-19 singles, top seed Kiran B rallied from a set down beat Sai Prateek K 20-22, 21-10, 21-19 to enter the summit round.

Kiran will take on Nikhil Shyam Sriram for the title. Sriram brushed aside Rohith M 21-8, 21-13 in the other last-four tie.

Results: Men’s semifinal: 1-Raghu M bt 3-Nikhil Shyam Sriram 10-21, 21-5, 21-17; 2-Daniel Farid S bt 4-Hemanth MG 16-21, 21-10, 21-10.

Doubles semifinal: 1-Prakash Raj S/Vaibhav bt 4-Kiran M/Saif Ali 21-18, 21-13; Amith Kumar/Ashith Surya bt Hemanth MG/Raghu Mariswamy 10-21, 21-17, 23-21.

Boys’ under-19 singles semifinal: 1-Kiran B bt 3-Sai Prateek K 20-22, 21-10, 21-19; 2-Nikhil Shyam Sriram bt Rohith M 21-8, 21-13.

Girls’ under-19 singles final: 4-Trisha Hegde bt 3-Drithi Yatheesh 12-21, 21-16, 21-17.
