Cops crack down on wheelies, 5 minors, their parents held

In a drive against wheelies in the east traffic division, the Banaswadi police arrested five juvenile riders. The offenders’ parents were also arrested.

The Banaswadi traffic police caught nine minors performing stunts with modified bikes on the busy outer ring road and arrested five of them. They also seized seven motorcycles from the minors and arrested their parents who were booked under various sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.

Additional commissioner of police (Traffic) R Hitendra said, “These boys indulge in bike wheelies for thrills and to post the photos and videos of their stunts on social media to impress others. The police have arrested five boys while four of the offenders are still absconding.” He also urged parents to educate children about traffic rules and to follow them for both their own safety and for the safety of fellow-commuters.

The five juveniles who were driving without a licence were counselled and produced before the Special Juvenile Justice Board which granted them bail. The arrested parents were also granted bail.

The traffic police have launched a drive against minors riding and driving vehicles across the city and have booked over 600 cases in the past 10 days.

After the recent accident on Hosur Road where a youngster was killed while racing with two of his friends, the police have cracked a whip on mechanics who modify bikes and booked cases against them. The police have also begun monitoring wheelie posts on social media to track minor riders and speedsters through the TV wall at the Traffic Management Centre (TMC) on Infantry Road.
