Young couple assaulted in Mangalore

A man, believed to be a member of a Hindu outfit, has been arrested for allegedly attacking a young couple at Pilikula in Mangalore City outskirts on Tuesday.

" We've arrested Sampath Shetty for assaulting a young couple. He is making contradictory statements about his organisation," Mangaluru City Police Commissioner T R Suesh said.

Shetty claimed that he belonged to Bajrang Dal. He also stated that he was an active member of Hindu Jagaran Vedike. The police were interrogating him, the commissioner added.

Shetty is a history-sheeter with Kavur police station. Shetty carried out the attack along with three others. The police are searching for the trio who are at large.

A video footage showing a man hitting a girl in the presence of a policeman has gone viral.

The footage shows two youths following a policeman accompanying two girls. One of them slows down while walking with the cop. As they approach a car, he manages to reach the girl and hit her head.

A boy and a girl, both first year Commerce students of POMPEI PU College, Talipady Aikala, had gone to Pilikula, City outskirts. The assault reportedly took place outside Pilikula.

The incident assumed significance as the boy and the girl belong to different religions.
