Beacon officer dies in avalanche; 6 civilians missing

Six civilians missing after avalanche hits vehicle

A Beacon officer who was swept away by an avalanche was found dead in north Kashmir's Kupwara district on Friday.

Reports said that two beacon officers came under an avalanche near Sadhna top in frontier Kupwara district when they were sitting beside a vehicle. One was rescued. The army and police later  launched a rescue operation for the other beacon officer, MP Singh of 109 RCC, who was found under the snow mass. He was taken to a mini military hospital in the area where doctors declared him brought dead, an army official said.

In another incident, seven people, including a seven-year-old boy, went missing after the vehicle they were travelling in came under an avalanche at Khoni Nallah near Sadhna Top. The boy was rescued by the army and efforts are on to find the others.

The 70-km long sole surface link road connecting the border Karnah area with Kupwara usually remains closed for three months during winters due to heavy snowfall.

Earlier in December, five army personnel were killed when avalanches triggered by heavy snowfall struck two forward posts in Gurez and Nowgam sectors of north Kashmir's Bandipora and Kupwara districts respectively.

The Met office has forecast rain and snow across Kashmir over the next few days, and authorities have asked people in avalanche-prone areas to remain indoors.
