Rain played spoilsport as the morning session was washed out on day three of the first Test between South Africa and India here.

The region has been hit by severe drought this year but a sudden change in weather brought respite to the people though only frustration was in store for the players and the cricket fans.

Rain continued for the most part of the morning session and there were puddles all across the Newlands turf. But things improved and a little after lunch was called, the groundstaff began to remove the covers, brightening chances of play in the second session.

South Africa were 65 for two overnight in their second innings, after bowling out India for 209. The hosts, who had made 286 in their first knock, have an overall lead of 142.
