Mangaluru prison clash leaves 11 injured

Eleven persons were injured in a clash between two groups in the district prison in Mangaluru on Monday.

Sources said that during the visiting hours in the evening, an inmate belonging to a particular community stared at inmate of another community and they began to fight with each other. This snowballed into a clash with inmates of both the communities assaulting each other. In Mangaluru prison, the Muslim and Hindu inmates are lodged separately in the prison to ensure that they do not come face to face. When the situation went out of control, additional police forces were summoned to the prison. The police resorted to mild lathi charge to dispense the crowd.

DCP (law and order) Hanumantharaya, ACPs Valentine D'Souza and Uday Nayak visited the prison.

The injured include six jail staffers and all of them have been admitted to the District Wenlock Hospital for treatment.
