<p>The Calcutta University on Thursday conferred Doctorate of Literature (DLitt) degree on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her contribution in the field of literature and social service.</p>.<p>The university's decision was challenged in the Calcutta High Court by two persons, a former professor of the University Ranjugopal Mukherjee and Abu Taleb, who in their petition had argued that Calcutta University is a state-funded institution and hence, there will a loss of credibility if it confers a degree upon the highest executive authority of the state.</p>.<p>The degree was presented by West Bengal Governor and Chancellor of the University Keshari Nath Tripathi at a ceremony at the Nazrul Manch in the metropolis.</p>
