Last Updated 15 January 2018, 17:38 IST

A 17-year-old bride-to-be was allegedly burnt alive after being gang-raped by two brothers in Uttar Pradesh's Hamirpur district, about 200 km from here.

According to police sources, the siblings, residents of the same village as the girl in Majhgawan area of the district, barged into the house of the victim when she was alone on Sunday and allegedly gang-raped her.

The father of the victim, a driver by profession, had gone to the neighboring Banda district on work.

The teen was later set ablaze by the perpetrators after  dousing her  with kerosene, the family alleged, the police said.

The alleged culprits also tried to set ablaze the brother of the victim, who happened to reach there and made an attempt to save his sister, the police said.

The victim was rushed to hospital, where she was declared brought dead.

The family members said that the victim's wedding  was to take place in April at a village in neighbouring Madhya Pradesh.

Police are investigating from several angles. ''We are also trying to find out if the girl committed suicide after being gang-raped,'' said a police official in Hamirpur.

A case has been registered and a hunt launched to nab the culprits, police said.
