The prime accused in 1992 Ajmer sex scandal, Suhail Ghani Chisty, surrendered after 26 years. He was sent to judicial custody and his trial began on charges of rape and blackmail.
The most wanted in the Ajmer blackmail scandal, Chisty, a resident of Khadim Mohalla (Dargah Bazar), surrendered before the district court on Thursday.
The scandal involved rape of about 80 girls, who were blackmailed using their photographs. Shockingly, 30 of them were schoolgirls. Later, 30 victims came forward and 12 filed cases against the accused. But only two victims appeared in the court proceedings. The gang would operate in such a way that one member would trap a girl and later force her to bring other friends.
The scandal was unearthed in 1992 after a group of scribes got hold of the photographs of victims from the lab where these photos were sent for developing. Soon after the scandal was bust, Ajmer city was shut for three days.
Suhail would befriend young girls and later gang-rape them and take their nude photographs. He had managed to escape after the scandal came to light. However, the court seized his property and issued an arrest warrant against him.
On Thursday, Suhail appeared with his advocate and surrendered before the court.
The accused include Farooq Chisty, a former youth Congress leader, who was later declared mentally unstable during his trial. Three accused committed suicide in jail, while another accused, Saleem Nafees Chisty, was arrested in 2012 by the police.
