The stampede occurred in the afternoon when the Bihar Sampark Kranti Express train arrived on platform 12 instead of platform 13, leading to a mad scramble of summer holiday travellers who tried to move from the original platform to the other platform along with their luggage.

Railway officials said around 15 people had been injured in the melee that resulted from the last-minute change of platform for the train. The injured were admitted to Ram Manohar Lohia and LNPJ hospitals.

Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is in Kolkata, ordered an inquiry into the incident and also announced compensation for the families of the deceased as well those injured, but blamed the people for the incident. “It is not the failure of the administration. People are responsible for such chaos. It is difficult to control such situations,” she said.
