The dead heat was witnessed at the counting of votes in the Gram Panchayat’s
Satabetta ward in Urdigere village in the taluk on Monday where two women candidates were neck to neck till the last vote.
When the counting ended both the candidates got the same number of votes. And the winning candidate had to be decided through picking of a lottery.
Sudha and Lakshmidevi had contested for a seat reserved for women in Satabetta.
If Sudha got 194 votes, Lakshmidevi got 193 and one more vote was added to her kitty when the postal ballot was opened and found that the person had voted for her.
As the counting began at the town’s Government Polytechnic in the morning, there was a keen contest from the word go between the two candidates.
When counting ended in a tie, the election officials decided on a lottery for which both the candidates agreed. Finally, Lakshmidevi was declared the winner.
