Had he listened to his brother and wife to pay penalty for excess luggage and fly Air India that day, they would probably be in grief and mourning today. But Vishwanath stood his ground and was to fly Kingfisher to Bangalore and take another flight to Mangalore. Even as he waited at the airport for his flight along with a friend, Tausif of Jeppu in Mangalore, who also opted out of Air India due to excess luggage, they learnt the flight was delayed by eight hours.

They resigned to their luck and waited. The next shattering news Tausif received was about the Air India Express plane crash. They had escaped by the skin of their teeth. In fact, Vishwanath and his brother had gone to the airport three days prior to his departure from Dubai and argued over the airline he should take.

Vishwanath was to attend the death anniversary of their father Padmanabha Moily on May 23. His brother wanted him to go directly to Mangalore. In the end, Vishwanath opted Kingfisher.

Recalling his narrow escape, Vishwanath said: “As soon as I heard the crash news, I called my brother in Dubai and cried. Had I boarded the ill-fated flight, I would not have been alive today. My life was saved by excess luggage.”
