Sources in the BBMP’s IT Department said, the identification of properties using information technology started two years ago in order to increase the revenue through property taxes.

The BBMP’s IT Department, whose office is located in Malleswaram near Chowdaiah Memorial Hall, is using the remote sensing technique to identify the properties and list them. The IT Cell sought the help of National Remote Sensing Authority (NRSA) for this purpose.

The sources added that the identification of properties has been done based on the combination of ward, street and house number.  In the core areas of the City, most of the houses have already been identified, some more are yet to be. The next major work would be to give unique number to the properties.

“It’s a complicated job to identify the properties and then give a unique number to it. We are doing it and hopefully will complete it in 45 to 60 days,” said an official associated with this project. The BBMP intends to increase its revenue through property tax up to Rs 1,100 crores. Presently the BBMP is getting around 65 to 75 per cent of its targeted amount.
