Girl shoots self with dad's gun

Police suspect suicide; neighbours debunk that theory
Last Updated 15 July 2010, 20:04 IST

Ambika (17), daughter of retired Army sepoy Muniswamy was cleaning the house, when she accidentally pressed the trigger of the gun belonging to her father. The lone bullet in the gun entered the chin of the girl, killing her instantly, police said. After his retirement from the Army six months ago, Muniswamy had taken up a job as a security guard which required him to carry the gun.

Finishing night shift, Muniswamy had returned home with his gun Thursday morning. He had gone out on an errand and his wife was cooking.

Police are not ruling out a suicide bid by the girl.  “Looking at the wound, it is clear that the barrel of the gun was very close to her chin. The velocity and trajectory of the bullet is also taken into account. Ambika was a SSLC dropout and we have learnt that her parents were planning for her marriage and she was not happy with the decision. We did not find any suicide note. We are waiting for the post-mortem report,” police said.

Neighbours, however didn’t agree with the suicide theory. “Ambika was a very jovial girl and she had no reason to take such extreme step. It was an accident,” a neighbour said.

The Indian-made double-barrel gun has been sent to the forensic science laboratory for further investigation and its  licence is valid till October 2011.
