Pleasing romance set in earthy reality

Last Updated 23 July 2010, 16:53 IST

Set in rustic hinterlands of Thanjavur district, Kalavaani takes one back to Bharatiraja times. Rooted in earthy reality, whipping up rural flavour, debutant direct Sargunam weaves a pleasing romantic saga. In fact, Kalavaani joins string of first time films full of surprise and promise.

The lovebirds are drawn from two feuding villages making their cupid chemistry combustible. Copiously spiced with comedy and bristling with fulsome fun and frolic, Kalavaani despite cliched story and script makes for passable matinee masala. Fetching photography, lilting scores, ensemble acting and promising debut make Kalavaani mirthful, maudlin romance to soak and savour in. Try it.
